Mandarin & Clementine

Easy-peel, sweet, and mild — mandarins and clementines are snacking citrus par excellence. Satsumas, Clementines, and Tangerines are all members of the mandarin family. With loose, easy-to-peel skin and few seeds, they're the perfect fruit for lunchboxes and quick snacks.

Buying & Storage

Buying: Choose mandarins that are heavy for their size. Look for bright color and firm texture. The loose, puffy skin is normal — it's what makes them easy to peel. Avoid any with soft spots.

Storage: Store at room temperature for a few days or refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. They keep shorter than larger citrus because of their thin skin. Best enjoyed fresh and soon after purchase.

Varieties

Satsuma: Seedless, easy to peel, mild and sweet. The most seedless mandarin variety, excellent for children and lunchboxes. Peak season: November–December.

Clementine: Tiny, seedless or nearly seedless, intensely sweet and aromatic. Smaller than Satsuma with deeper flavor. Peak season: November–January. Often sold in boxes.

Tangerine: Larger than Clementine, slightly seedy, bright and aromatic. Less sweet than Clementine but with more pronounced citrus character.

Tangelo: A cross between tangerine and grapefruit — larger, with slightly more complex flavor and more juice.

Culinary Uses

Fresh Eating: The ultimate snacking citrus — peel and eat out of hand or divide into segments. Perfect for lunchboxes and children's snacks.

Salads: Mandarin segments add sweetness and color to green salads, particularly with bitter greens like endive or radicchio.

Desserts & Baking: Mandarin juice and zest add sweetness and aromatic depth to cakes, custards, and glazes.

Juicing: Freshly pressed mandarin juice is sweet and aromatic — excellent on its own or mixed with other citrus.

Nutrition

Mandarins are rich in vitamin C for immune support and contain beneficial flavonoids. The sweet flavor makes them a naturally appealing way to get citrus nutrition, especially for children.

The white pith contains soluble fiber (pectin) that supports digestive health and feeds beneficial gut bacteria. The zest contains aromatic compounds and antioxidant flavones.

Peak Season

Mandarin and Clementine season runs from November through January, making them the quintessential winter holiday fruit. They're at their sweetest and most flavorful during this peak season.
