Green Leaf Lettuce
Green leaf lettuce is the everyday salad lettuce — loose-headed, bright green, mildly sweet, and broadly useful. It forms the base of countless restaurant house salads and home salad bowls. Less assertive than Romaine and less delicate than Butterhead, it sits in a comfortable middle ground of mild flavor and moderate crunch.
Loosely formed, open head with large, ruffled bright green leaves. No tight heading — the leaves spread out rather than forming a compact ball. Light green throughout with slightly ruffled or frilled edges. Grows as a loose rosette.
Texture: More tender than Romaine but crisper than Butterhead. A pleasant, moderate crunch that works in almost any application.
Flavor: Mild, slightly sweet, and fresh with very little bitterness. Versatile enough to work with almost any dressing or topping — the culinary equivalent of a blank canvas.
House Salads
The quintessential base for any all-purpose house salad — pairs with any dressing.
Sandwiches
Large, pliable leaves work excellently in sandwiches and wraps.
Mixed Greens
Combine with arugula, radicchio, or endive for a more complex, balanced salad mix.
Tacos
Shredded green leaf provides fresh crunch in fish and shrimp tacos.
• Dress immediately before serving — more tender than Romaine and wilts relatively quickly
• The loose head means individual leaves are easy to separate without tearing
• A reliable, widely available option when specialty varieties aren't accessible
Keeps 5–7 days in the refrigerator wrapped in a damp paper towel. The loose head is more vulnerable to drying than tight-headed varieties — seal well.
