Crenshaw Melon
Cucumis melo hybrid (Casaba × Persian)
A large, oblong melon with wrinkled, yellow-green skin and extraordinarily sweet, salmon-pink to orange flesh. A cross between a Casaba and a Persian melon, the Crenshaw is considered by many melon lovers to be the finest-tasting melon available in the US. It's less common than cantaloupe but worth seeking out at farmers' markets in August and September.
Look for a Crenshaw with yellow skin — greenish skin indicates underripeness. The blossom end should yield to gentle pressure. A ripe Crenshaw has a sweet, slightly spicy fragrance. The wrinkled, ribbed surface is characteristic and not a sign of damage.
Crenshaws are large — typically 8–10 lbs — so you're committing to a significant quantity. They're worth the investment for the exceptional flavor. Available at farmers' markets and specialty grocery stores in August–September.
The Crenshaw delivers extraordinary sweetness — often described as the sweetest melon available in the US market. Its salmon-pink to orange flesh is buttery, yielding, and intensely fragrant. The flavor is complex, with spicy notes that distinguish it from the straightforward sweetness of cantaloupe. At peak ripeness, it is genuinely remarkable.
Eat Fresh: The Crenshaw is so exceptional that it's best eaten simply — chilled slices with nothing added. Don't mask the flavor.
Prosciutto: Outstanding with thinly sliced prosciutto and fresh mint — the sweet-savory contrast is elevated by the Crenshaw's complexity.
Chilled Soup: Blend with lime, ginger, and a touch of honey for an elegant chilled melon soup for summer entertaining.
Cocktails: Crenshaw muddled with fresh mint and a splash of rum or tequila is a sublime summer cocktail.
Crenshaws have a shorter shelf life than cantaloupe — once ripe, use within 3–4 days. Refrigerate ripe melons and wash the exterior before cutting. Cut melon should be stored in an airtight container and used within 3 days.
